Hood River Sand & Gravel: Nearly a Century of Service in the Columbia Gorge
Hood River Sand & Gravel (HRSG) has been a cornerstone of construction and development in the Columbia Gorge for close to 100 years. What began as a small local operation in the 1930s has grown into a trusted regional supplier known for quality materials, reliable service, and deep roots in the communities it serves.
A Legacy Built in the Gorge (1930s–2018)
HRSG was founded in Hood River, Oregon, during the 1930s, supplying essential construction materials to a growing region. From the beginning, the company focused on producing high‑quality sand, rock, and ready‑mixed concrete sourced from the unique geology of the Hood River Watershed.
Over the decades, the company expanded well beyond its original location. New sites in The Dalles, OR; Dallesport, WA; North Bonneville, WA; and Goldendale, WA allowed HRSG to support projects throughout the Columbia Basin. By the early 2000s, the company had modernized its operations with an updated fleet and computerized concrete color‑matching systems.
A New Chapter Under Global Leadership (2019–Present)
In April 2019, Hood River Sand & Gravel was acquired by CRH Americas Materials—one of the world’s leading building materials groups. While the ownership changed, the HRSG name and local identity remained. Operating under the Hood River Sand & Gravel brand ensures continuity for long‑time customers while giving the company access to expanded resources, technology, and support.
This partnership has strengthened HRSG’s ability to serve the broader Columbia Basin with the same commitment to quality that has defined the company for generations.
Materials Shaped by the Gorge Itself
The Columbia Gorge’s geological history plays a direct role in the materials we provide. The region’s deposits—formed by ancient Missoula floods, Mount Hood volcanic activity, and centuries of natural erosion—create ideal sources of sand, gravel, and rock.
These materials have supported countless local projects. A notable example is the Hood River Waterfront Park, built in 2008 using rock crushed and repurposed by HRSG. That same material later contributed to urban renewal efforts along Oak Street, demonstrating the company’s ongoing role in shaping the region’s infrastructure and community spaces.
