Large Scale Hood River Sand & Gravel Projects
Hood River Sand, Gravel & Ready Mix, Inc. has been providing rock and concrete products to construction projects throughout the Columbia River Gorge region for over 75 years. Our fleet of modern equipment is capable of delivering highly developed materials in some of the most demanding conditions.
Since 2001 Hood River Sand has been involved in the development of hundreds of windmills in the region. Long known by windsurfers for the steady winds, alternative energy producers have now discovered the benefits of the constant winds generated through the Columbia River Gorge. Our portability, knowledge of the area, and familiarity with addressing these remote installations has provided developers with a high quality resource in this undeveloped area.
Bonneville Dam 2nd Powerhouse Bypass System
In 2002 we poured over 35,000 yards of concrete under a $2.9 million contract with Kiewit Construction for the Army Corps of Engineers. The project involved placing concrete in water and above the water thru two “in-water” work periods. Specifications called for 6000 PSI High Strength Concrete placed in and above the water for the By-Pass and required strict Quality Control. Also needed to place a section of specially produced Non-Magnetic concrete for specialized fish counting equipment. Won Excellence in Concrete Award.
Provided concrete for development of several large multi-building server farm in The Dalles. Very tight specifications with complex infrastructure and timeframes.
McNeil Island Commitment Center
In 2002 Hood River Sand provided materials for a prison expansion on an island in the Puget Sound as a subcontractor to Absher Kitchell for the Washington State Department of Corrections. The project required setting up a portable plant on the island and barging materials over. Employees all needed to be certified for work in a secure environment and had to have HazMat training for the project.
The Dalles Dam
In this project for the Corps of Engineers, we placed 2,500 yards of High Strength specialized in-water concrete with restraints on long-distance pumping during a two month in water work permit window at the Dam in 2004. We finished the project on time and on budget.
In 2002 the company provided materials for the building of a 250-megawatt gas-fired power plant in Goldendale Washington for Calpine working with Enron subsidiary Nepco.
Bonneville Dam Juvenile Fish Bypass
In 1998 we provided 10,000 yards of concrete for construction of a juvenile fish bypass system developed for the Bonneville Dam. Placement required winter operations during short in-water placement window.
Hood River Bridge
Built Double “S” Curve bridge across the Hood River. Won Excellence in Concrete award from The Oregon Concrete & Aggregate Producers Association, Inc. and was featured as one of the best projects in the Northwest using concrete.
Bonneville Navigation Locks
We acted as a subcontractor and miscellaneous concrete supplier for Kiewit/Atkinson/Groves construction of a new navigation locks at Bonneville Dam in the late 1980’s for the Army Corps of Engineers.
John Day Dam
Hood River Sand provided concrete from a portable concrete batch plant for the construction of a juvenile fish by-pass system around the John Day Dam for the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Other recent larger scale commercial/industrial pours have included facilities for Home Depot, Wal Mart, Kmart, Fred Meyer, Cardinal Glass, Ernst, and Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.
